A self-tape is a response to a particular brief. Your first task is to understand that request; your second is to make the performance easy to see and hear. A repeatable setup leaves more attention for the work itself.
Read the instructions before recording
Find the requested scene or material, slate details, framing, file format, delivery method and deadline. Note whether there is a separate instruction for each role. If an important detail is missing, use the stated contact route to ask before making assumptions.
- Confirm which role and version of the material you are preparing.
- Write down the deadline and its time zone.
- Check whether a slate or separate introduction is requested.
- Keep the original instructions with your notes.
Test your setup with a short recording
Place the camera steadily at a comfortable height and leave enough room for the requested framing. Use a quiet space and check that your face is visible without a bright window behind you. Listen to a short test with headphones if you have them.
You do not need to turn your room into a production set. Start with the equipment available to you, reduce distractions and adjust one thing at a time. Avoid spending money on extra equipment before you know what your existing setup can do.
For a voice-specific audition, check the requested audio format and listen for room noise or distortion in your recording. Send the requested material; do not add a video or other files unless the instructions call for them.
Watch the file you will actually send
Review the final exported file from beginning to end. Check that the picture stays in focus, your voice is understandable, the take is complete and the filename follows the brief. Allow time for uploading and opening the delivered file again.
The short introduction video on your World Star Talent profile is limited to 30 seconds. A production’s requested self-tape may have different instructions; do not confuse the profile introduction with a longer audition submission.
- Use the specified filename and file type.
- Remove unintended outtakes or private conversation.
- Check that any required link opens with the intended permissions.
- Record the date, role and version you submitted.
